Biographie

Martin Wettstein (*1970) lebt als freischaffender Komponist mit seiner Familie am Zürichsee. Er besuchte das altsprachliche Gymnasium und studierte Theorie und Komposition bei Hans Ulrich Lehmann, Matthias Steinauer und Edison Denissow, sowie Klavier bei Daniel Fueter, Christoph Lieske und Homero Francesch. Aufenthalte in St. Petersburg und dem Tschaikowsky Konservatorium in Moskau rundeten seine Ausbildung ab.

Wettstein schreibt vorwiegend Auftragskompositionen, so beispielsweise für das casalQuartett, das Amar-Quartett, das Raschèr-Saxophonquartett, das Schweizer Klaviertrio, das ensemble TaG, das gershwin piano quartet oder das Harry White Trio, den Singkreis der Engadiner Kantorei, das Vokalensemble Cantapella, den Circus Musicus Stuttgart, Festival Strings Lucerne, Weinberger Kammerorchester, kammerphilharmonie graubünden und viele weitere mehr.

Die Werkaufträge stammen aus dem In- und Ausland, so zum Beispiel von der Internationalen Hugo-Wolf-Akademie, dem Musikkollegium Winterthur, dem Deutschen Literaturarchiv Marbach, dem Wuxi Municipal Goverment in China, dem Boswiler Sommer, den Schlosskonzerten Rapperswil oder von der Hochschule der Künste Zürich ZHdK.

Ein besonderes Anliegen ist ihm auch die Arbeit mit Kindern und Jugendlichen, so begleitete er den Jugendchor Zürich als Komponist und Pianist auf einer Koreatournee oder schrieb die „Johanniter-Kantate“ für die Kantonsschule Küsnacht ZH.

Seine Hobbys sind Sport, lesen, schreiben, zeichnen und Webdesign.

Neben dem Komponieren, Spielen und Unterrichten betätigt Martin Wettstein sich auch als Konzertplaner, sei es als Konzertdramaturg für die VPB Vaduzer Weltklassik-Konzerte in Liechtenstein oder als Verantwortlicher für die Konzeption der Kammermusikreihe „abendsfrüh“ im Literaturhaus Zürich. Er ist Dozent für Musiktheorie, Musikgeschichte und Klavier am Zürich Konservatorium Klassik und Jazz und an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHdk und Co-Präsident des Lehrerkonvents. Martin Wettstein ist stellvertretender Organist an der reformierten Kirche in Küsnacht ZH und hält regelmässig Vorträge über musikalische Themen.

Martin Wettstein is a free-lance composer and lives with his family in Küsnacht, near lake Zurich. He studied at the Zurich high school where he graduated with Greek and Latin. He received his musical instruction from amongst others Hans Ulrich Lehmann, Matthias Steinauer and Edison Denissow (music theory) and Daniel Fueter, Christoph Lieske, Homero Francesch and Naum Starkman (piano). Most of his opus are commissioned. Beside his working as a composer, he is also active as a pianist, theatre musician and concert organiser. He teaches musical theory and history of music at the Conservatory in Zurich and plays for CDs and broadcast recordings. He won many competitions and received various bursaries.

Martin Wettstein lives as a freelance composer with his family in Küsnacht on the lake of Zurich. He attended secondary school in Zurich where he completed his classical language undergraduate studies. He received his musical training from Hans Ulrich Lehmann, Matthias Steinauer and Edison Denissow (music theory), Daniel Fueter, Christoph Lieske (vocational classes of the Winterthur School of Music where he received his teachers diploma with an overall distinction), Homero Francesch (master class at the Zurich School of Music), and Naum Starkman (piano) in Moscow. He considers himself to be a self-taught composer. Martin Wettstein plays with the 'Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich' the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Winterthur City Orchestra, with chamber music partners including the ‘Carmina Quartett’, the tenor Christoph Homberger, the flutist Mathias Ziegler, the flutist Qiling Chen or the violinist Stefan Tönz. In 2004 a tour of China is scheduled together with the 'Amarquartett' which successfully premiered in 2002 at the Wigmore Hall in London with the piece for string quartet 'Verdis Traum', he will give workshops about his compositions at the Peking School of Music. He has worked as a composer and pianist at the Festival Cluj Modern, where he interpreted piano etudes and songs from Daniel Fueter as well as his own piano setting 'SONDE'. More recently Martin Wettstein has written works for the cellist Pi Chin Chien and Sébastien Singer, the ensemble 'Ars Amata', the duo for violin and marimbaphone Rahel Cunz and Jaqueline Ott, the choir 'a cantapella' under Karl Scheuber and the 'Engadiner Kantorei' singing circle under Anna Jelmorini. Works for the orchestra of the Zurich Conservatory under Massimiliano Matesic and music for voice and the colour organ are scheduled. Many of his works will be and already have been recorded by Radio DRS II and SWR. His piece for string quartet 'Verdis Traum' was produced as a CD together with works from Schulhoff and Mozart by the radio station DRS II.
Martin Wettstein is a theatre musician, organises concerts and gives courses in music theory at the conservatory and music school in Zurich and the conservatory and music school in Winterthur.

Compositeur indépendant, Martin Wettstein vit avec sa famille à Küsnacht, au bord du lac de Zurich. Il étudia au gymnase de Zurich où il obtint le baccalauréat „latin-grec“. Pour sa formation musicale, il visita, entre autres, les cours de Hans Ulrich Lehmann, Matthias Steinauer et Edison Denissow pour la théorie musicale et de Daniel Fueter, Christoph Lieske, Homero Francesch et Naum Starkman pour le piano.

Outre les oeuvres qu’il compose sur commande, il travaille comme pianiste, musicien de théâtre et organisateur de concerts, produit des enregistrement (CD ou radio) et voue une partie de son temps à l’enseignement de la théorie musicale et à l’histoire de la musique au Conservatoire et à l’Eole de musique de Zurich. Martin Wettstein est lauréat de divers concours et a reçu plusieurs prix d’études.
